What Research Suggests

“The early childhood period – from birth to Age 8 – represents a significant developmental period during which rapid and significant cognitive, linguistic, and social-emotional competencies are established. Learning in the early childhood period occurs in the context of relationships within and between numerous systems (including a child’s home, childcare setting, preschool, and the interactions among them). Thus, supporting a child’s early learning is the shared responsibility of adults in these systems, and is enhanced through coordinated and cooperative home-school connections.”

The Perfect
Match

Montessori and the International Baccalaureate-Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP) complement each other exceptionally well. At the heart of both learning philosophies is the independent learner developing skills for life through a personalised approach, within an enabling environment.

MONTESSORI

INDEPENDENT
LEARNER

IB-PYP

Inquiry-led teaching and learning is built on every child’s individual knowledge and interest, emphasising ‘how to learn’ and ‘how to find out’. Teachers are facilitators and not distributors of knowledge. They make learning engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant.

MONTESSORI

The Montessori philosophy: ‘help me to do it myself’ is central to nurturing independent learners. Each child is given the freedom to choose, encouraged to work in a constructive manner, respect teachers and peers, and participate in the care of his/her environment. Over time, this method fosters independence, creativity, open communication, problem-solving skills, and above all, a place where children feel a sense of belonging, which makes them love to learn.

SKILLS FOR LIFE

IB-PYP

The young IB learner will be introduced to not just the skills, but also the knowledge, attitudes and values needed to adapt in a rapidly evolving world.

MONTESSORI

The Montessori child develops critical skills for life through the use of specially designed materials in a prepared environment. Self-correcting materials when used in a mixed-age learning environment, enable children to become creative thinkers and resilient learners at a very young age.

PERSONALISED
APPROACH

IB-PYP

The prior knowledge and learning of a child is first determined, and further learning is planned through lessons that are adapted to support each child’s development.

MONTESSORI

Every child is unique, works independently, at his or her own pace, and is given the freedom to choose his/her activities.

ENABLING
ENVIRONMENT

IB-PYP

The physical learning environment must be the third teacher. It empowers children to try new things, investigate them further and share their learning. A safe, comfortable, stimulating and responsive environment is a world of wonder for the IB learner.

MONTESSORI

The prepared environment is central to Montessori. It readies young minds for inquiry and learning, giving every child the freedom to fully develop his/her unique potential through exploration and the proper use of developmentally-appropriate materials.
